The standup comedy industry has been experiencing an accelerated growth in recent years. In 2014, Billboard estimated that the industry was generating $300 million per year. This was a far cry from the situation in the 1990s and the 2000s when standup comedy was confined in small comedy clubs. At the moment, standup comedians can command large audiences, and a handful of them can easily sell out a theater.

How did the industry get to be this big? Primarily, the proliferation of digital media provided additional channels for comics to gain new fans. For example, online streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu provide comedians the opportunity to record hour-long specials, something which used to be confined to specialized channels such as Comedy Central. Moreover, other channels such as Twitter and podcasting have been seen as effective launching pads for budding comedy careers.
