The dachshund breed originated in Germany, with the word actually meaning “badger dog” in the German language. Its original purpose was for hunting, and historians believe that the dog may have been bred from smaller hounds such as the bibarhund and the schweisshound (bloodhound) lines.
Hunters selectively bred the dwarf mutations of these dogs until, sometime in the 18th century, the dachshund standard breed was achieved. These dogs typically were employed in packs, tracking down wild boar and flushing badger dens. As time went on, breeders began working to make an even smaller version of the dachshund–one that could fit its way into rabbit holes. This is how miniature dachshunds came to be.
